Many of our clients are concerned about how to care for their hair extensions using the sandwich method, ring extensions or keratin, and whether they can cope. Hair extensions require special attention due to the fact that they are dead hair and we do not supply them with natural ingredients through the roots. However, you don’t have to worry that the extra hairs will cause you more work and problems. With just a little attention and heart, you’ll be able to enjoy the hairstyle you’ve always dreamed of. We will tell you what to do, what to pay special attention to and what to avoid when caring for your hair extensions.
How to Comb Your Hair Extensions
Many of us cannot imagine going to bed without doing a few things. To take care of our teeth, we brush and floss. To take care of our body, we take a relaxing shower and use lotion. To take care of our complexion we do our make-up properly and apply a cream. To take care of our hair and hair extensions we brush and condition them. This is the first step in taking care of your hair extensions.
This removes dust and dirt from your hair during the day, smooths the ends and prevents tangling. Start combing from the ends and work your way up slowly. Pay special attention to the seams, making sure to avoid damaging them. Use a brush with fine bristles, preferably natural boar. We recommend tying long hair into a loose braid to prevent tangling while you sleep. However, if strands do get tangled, under no circumstances tug or pull on the hair. Gently detangle the tangles with your fingers and then use a brush to smooth them out.
In our store you can find: brown hair extensions and 18 inch hair.
How to Wash Your Hair Extensions
The second important step when caring for your hair extensions is to wash them. You need to adjust the frequency of shampooing according to your life and the way you use your extensions. However, we recommend washing them at least twice a week. Use mild, moisturizing shampoos without SLS, SLES or parabens that will not affect the bonding and structure.
It is best to wash your hair extensions in the shower. Adjust the water temperature to your liking – just make sure it is not too hot. Apply the shampoo to your hands and lather gently. Then apply the shampoo to your scalp and massage gently. Work your way through the scalp, making sure not to miss any areas. Then move the lather downwards, washing the lengths of your hair. Avoid circular and pulling motions, which can tangle your hair. Rinse the lather after washing and repeat the process when needed.
How to Blow-dry Hair Extensions
Extensions should be handled gently. Do not use a towel or a hot air dryer. Simply run your fingers through the hair and gently pat the water out of the hair extensions with a towel. However, we recommend replacing your regular towel with a cotton towel or even a cotton T-shirt. Due to its softer texture, this choice will ensure less damage to your hair. Wrap your hair and wait for much of the water to soak into the towel. Then, if you are in a hurry, blow dry your hair with cool air. However, if you have the time, opt to let your hair dry naturally. We do not recommend going to bed with wet hair. This can tangle and damage your hair too much.
How to Straighten and Curl Your Hair Extensions Using Heat
We know that your hair extensions and hair thickeners just beg to be styled, straightened, curled and braided. But be careful not to overdo it with frequent styling. Due to its properties, dead hair loses elasticity and moisture more easily. As a result, it becomes dry and dull faster, which increases the tendency to tangle. For our part, we recommend the use of thermo-active preparations, which provide protection not only for the hair extensions, but also for our strands. Just spray the product on your hair, let it dry and voilà! Now you can do whatever you like with your hair. The second way is to use lower temperatures. Sometimes you can get unexpected results by using a much lower temperature than the one you usually use. When styling with heat, pay special attention to the seams – try to avoid them.
Try to dry your hair as infrequently as possible. In summer, they are already exposed to a significant amount of heat every day, and they are likely to air dry quickly anyway, so if you can, give yourself a break from blow drying your hair and do it au naturel. Avoid straighteners, too, as they can further damage already dried hair. Besides, a sleek style will only accentuate frizzy hair more.
Make a concoction of water, aloe vera juice and avocado oil. Have it on hand at all times to spray on your hair when you need a little moisture and/or control. Another good option is argan oil mixed with water.
